We are the School of Computing, Electronics & Mathematics at Plymouth University. Our entry to the competition was made by myself, Peter Mills, on behalf of the Electronics department.
We are constantly striving to do the best we can with the resources that we have available, but like so many departments within all universities we have very tight budgets. Sometimes we are not always able to fund the small important stuff that seems to get forgotten. It would be terrific for the University and, of course, the staff to win such a prize, as we would all like to enhance and improve the student experience. After all, the students of today will be the engineers of tomorrow!
If we were fortunate enough to win, these are the areas and points we would look to improve and enhance for our students and staff:
Added Value for the students–
We would like to be able to offer free electronic components, e.g. capacitors, resistors, LEDs, OP amps, etc. We currently offer a small range of free components which the students have free access to, but we would like to enhance and extend the range of components that we can offer.
Project Store–
We would also like to make improvements to the stores area by improving the layout and reorganising.
Winning Certificates–
We want to highlight for the students the achievements of previous years’ students in our Showcase Day Experience.
Module Spares Kits–
In addition to the free components in point 2, we would like to introduce a spares system for each module. This would allow the students to get access to spares whilst working in the lab environment. These spares would be specifically for the module and would not be a part of the free components range.
