Why would the MotoMod's USB work when the Moto Z's didn't?

I apologize in advance since this is sort of a backwards question for this board.  I have an Ettus B205-mini SDR board that I was trying to plug into my moto-z.  Without the MotoMod attached, I can get no connection (or even lights on the device).  The device itself has the wide USB3 connector on it.  I tried using that to USB-OTG to USBC, but no dice.  I then plugged in just the mico-USB connector in the the 205-mini and went through the USB-OTG and USBC, and still no love.

Yet, when I plug my motomod with the usb2 firmware installed, I can make a connection via the microUSB connector on it.

So this question is backwards, but why do I have success via the motomod, but not the moto z itself (at the end of the day the moto mod is the important connection for me, but I am trying to figure out what I am missing here)?

With Moto Mods, the USB-Ext protocol defines Host/Device (and is really only applicable to USB 3.1, since 2.0 are only devices).  The OTG cable serves to flip the lines but nothing more.

With the Moto Z, OTG serves its full purpose of Host/Device identification.  However, this only works with a TypeC OTG cable.  You cannot use a microUSB OTG adapter and then daisy chain that with a microUSB->TypeC adapter.  So your issue when attaching to the Moto Z directly is that your Device is being treated as a Host.
