HI Needs,
you are absolutely right!
Currently we can see significant trend in the market to replace cylindrical MELF resistor by SMD resistor!
Several reasons:
- improvement of mounting speed
- better solder joint reliability
- easy mounting
- cost reduction
Normally MELF is used for 1 of below 3 reasons. Depend on the reason we can provide s SMD solution which you can test as all these parts are stocked at Farnell.
Why doe engineer still use MELF?
1.) Surge withstanding
-> SMD surge prrof resistors available now ERJP, ERJT series
2.) Stability over lifetime, precision
-> SMD high reliability, stability over life time Thin Film Reistors available ERA-series
-> no drift of resistance value even under toughest environment conditions
3.) high power required
-> SMD Wide terminal series available ERJB
Of course all Panasonic SMD resistors correspond to AEC-Q200!
