KiCAD 8: RX23E-B kit - serial comms schematic

I'm building a PCB for Renesas' RX23E-B microcontroller. In this post: the UART / serial communications design

image

I've taken over the design of the Renesas Solution Starter Kit for RX23E-B, without the FTDI serial-to-USB.

image

I'm not sure yet if I will keep the same uart peripheral. It shares its pins with the lcd segment outputs. And I may want to use those too. But if I change the uart, I can't reuse the Renesas out-of-box software ...

I would tend to include footprints for all variants of solutions I'm interested in, so that I could populate each particular solution when needed. I always buy several PCBs, so I could even assemble multiple versions, each populated in a different way. Sometimes it is worth routing some signals to jumper selectable pins to allow resolution of conflicts.

With this 100 pin controller, and up to 9 pin functions, I need to put some limits. In order to get the job done.

Here's the design that I'm using as inspiration: Renesas' starter kit.

    image

I don't plan to make a like-for-like. I'm cherry-picking what I'd like to have. And then expose as much of the other pins as doable.

USB, PMODs and CAN will go.
The 4 - 20 mA transmitter and AC excitation driver will go on separate PCBs.
Thermocouple connector, RDC and related resistor network will mostly go on a separate little board too.

All power provisions external. Maybe I make a convenience PCB for that ...

I plan to keep debug access, (maybe) LCD, UART and all analogue options.

My design will end up to be more expensive than the Renesas kit (and that isn't cheap either). But I figured that, for that budget, I'd rather have some fun and experiments ...
