USB to Banana Plug Adapter

This blog is to make available the USB to Banana Plug adapter design in case anyone else wants to build one.

This adapter converts a standard 2 pin banana jack to a USB connector and a 0.1" pitch header. This allows bench power supplies to test USB devices with any voltage and current. It also allows USB cables to be tested for voltage drop.

Here is a picture showing this simple adapter:

Here is a quick video explaining the adapter:

The zip file of PCB manufacturing artwork I used to have these cards built is attached. It can be sent as is to a PCB fab shop.

USBpower.zip

I used banana plugs like this.

Incidentally, I have made other PCBs that can convert banana plug cables to USB:

That looks like what I was doing before - and why I made a PCB. If USB connectors were built to accept cables, it might not have been necessary.

Very cool idea.  I have recently been building a USB based device and as part of my bring-up procedure, I first power the board from a current limited power supply to minimize and potential damage from construction faults (shorts, reversed components, etc.).  I have been using a salvaged USB connector with some soldered on leads, but I can clearly see that you are onto a much more robust solution.  Here is a picture of my poor attempt to do a similar thing:

I think that I might need to build something similar to yours, but adapted a bit to suit my power supply.

Thanks for sharing a great idea!

    Thanks Doug!

Like I said before, I was already thinking to make something like this, but I think I’ll just use your design!

iI appreciate the warning about the spring too.

It takes time to get all the data in sync. I can't seem to get videos to upload directly, so I have to send them to Youtube first.

I want the Youtube video to show a link to the element14 blog so I have to publish the blog to get the link before I can embed the video. etc.

Hopefully it is all there now....
