Funway into SME (Surface Mount Electronics)

celcius1 over 2 years ago

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to let everyone know I have started a new video series called “Funway into SME” (Surface Mount Electronics)

What I am doing is going through the old DSE Funway volumes 2 and 3 and converting them into modernised versions of the original projects, including updating the circuit’s to remove components difficult to source. And also add some power efficiency.

As the series progresses I’ll post a link to each video in the series. I have even had to create my own funway videos to provide the needed building blocks for the more advanced projects, due to changing the way components interact in the old circuits.

Part of the series is first showing how to hand solder Surface Mount Components then progress onto using stencils and board heater/reflow ovens.

And as each project video gets released, I'll be running a give away competition for each one of the projects!

The introductory video can be found here

So the first project video is up its a long 48 minute video, but over the next few days I'll also release it as 3 separate videos for those that want to watch separate sections at a time.

Project 2 - The Ding Dong Doorbell: Part 1 is now live, the assembly and testing video will be out once the components arrive from element14

    Hi Paul,

    Here is some feedback:

    * The intro sequence could be shortened. 10 seconds feels too long to hold people's attention. Maybe just display your title for 10 seconds but start talking after just 2 seconds? That way people can see your title for as long as you currently have it, but they can start absorbing your spoken information near-immediately (because they are there for that, not for the music).

    * The music over your speech just sells yourself short. Your content will be worth more than the music, so it's better to completely fade out the music (if any) to zero amplitude, and just speak.

    * I hope the PCB sponsorship stuff is kept to a minimum. Why not leave it to the end, so that viewers can skip it? That way you're hopefully meeting their requirement, while also considering the audience, since many of them will find it really irritating seeing all the PCB spam which is present on so many electronics videos these days.

    * The title is confusing, it may mean nothing to viewers, who may not have a clue that "Funway" is a title of books. I didn't know that at all, so I relied on the next part of the title to help me, but the text SME is also confusing. It normally means "Small/Medium Enterprise" (or occasionally "Subject-Matter Expert"). Maybe it should be changed to SMT or SMD ("Surface Mount Technology" or "Surface Mount Devices"), because they are more familiar acronyms for your subject-matter. "Funway into SMT" would make more sense. In a similar vein, your text above assumes people know what DSE Funway is, and probably 90% of people may not have any idea. It's worth explaining any acronym and simplifying content where you can, otherwise it may cause the audience to be lost in a longer video if that occurs often.

    * I browsed a couple of your other videos, and one of them has an interesting background (some racks of equipment). Maybe that's a better backdrop than the one in the current video.

Looking forward to the videos! Beginners should make use of SMD as soon as they can, so I think it will be good to have a series that shows that, and anything else that you're doing, since all your videos that I browsed looked interesting. Best of luck with the series!

The sound of the video seemed a bit low to me.

You really don't need a $400 microphone for YouTube videos.

You aren't selling your lovely voice but your technical knowledge, so a basic job will do.

Lot's of articles on web but I suggest you look at Behringer - cheap and cheerful but OK for basics.

What's the rest of your recording set up like ?

a variety of second hand camera's one of which is a Canon EOS 60D, my dad's old Sanyo Camcorder, and my iPhone, when i can afford it i'll upgrade my equipment to something a bit more professional, plus i have made some my own camera mounting rigs with my 3d printer, i might give an overview of my bench at a later date.

I'm about to reupload that video as well, done a few mastering changes including boosting my spoken audio

Thanks for sharing this, I have never read *** Smiths's books so I'm interested to learn more!

There is at least one volume on archive.org.

    Great work!
