Extra raspberry sauce: The great Raspberry Pi B+ giveaway

15 Jul 2014

You may have heard that there’s a new Pi in town. The Raspberry Pi B+ launched on July 14th 2014, the first major update to the credit card sized computer that changed so much in the world of electronics when it first launched two years ago.

We wanted to make sure that our element14 Community members and social media followers had the chance to be among the first to get their hands on it. So, we decided to give 100 away. We couldn’t just go out on the street and hand them out to anyone and everyone! We wanted to put the new Pis directly into the hands of our members and followers, on launch day, so we needed some kind of secret code!

That’s why early on the morning of the launch, we started spreading the word. On all of our social media channels we posted messages letting people know that there would be element14 ice cream huts in central London today. They were giving out free ice cream to everyone but, if you knew the secret code word, you could become the recipient of more than just a tasty treat. The first 100 people to find the element14 ice cream huts and ask for ‘extra raspberry sauce’ with their ice cream became some of the first people in the world to get their hands on a brand new Raspberry Pi B+. We tweeted using the hashtag #extraraspberry throughout the day, with these being a few of the best tweets and pictures.

Now, we appreciate that many of you couldn’t possibly get to central London with only a few hours notice (or even a few days). The element14 Community is global, so we want to give everyone the chance to get hold of a free Raspberry Pi B+ early on. For that reason, we’ve held back another 10 to give away. To be in with a chance of getting one, just comment on this blog post and tells us in under 50 words the first project you would put your new Pi B+ to use on. We’re especially interested in hearing about projects that make use of the new board’s better connectivity and power features.

I was at Westminster very recently I missed this by a week! I hope you got to do some touristy stuff afterwards too. The weather was nice - London and the team looks good!

Hi. I'm Zachary Igielman, I'm 14 and from London. Sadly, I could not make it to the stall ( had school), but I'd love a B+.

I would like to use it for my year long time-lapse and robots because of it's low-power consumption.

I am also working on an add-on board. I need the model B+ to test if it fits and works properly before I sell it. You can see my first iteration here: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BrOR-icCEAEyUox.jpg:large

I really hope I get one. Thanks! image

I have lots of ideas that I'd like to try out with a Pi, but my first would be to turn the Pi in to a portable instrument. Now there are extra USB ports, I could hook up a MIDI keyboard and audio interface as well as a mouse and keyboard… or if I was feeling particularly adventurous, a touch screen. Then get my music-mad 5 year old daughter tinkering too!

I would love to own a Model B+. I would use the Raspberry Pi Model B+ in order to program and make it into an everyday Touch Screen Smart Phone. The Smart Phone will have solar panels (for power) and portable battery (for backup power) it will run on an operating system made on the idea by myself and programmed and made by a team of programmers. It will contain WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC (if possible), 3G/4G chip. The exterior of the device will have a 15mp back and front camera (with optical zoom), LED flash, Microphone, Loudspeaker and Earpiece, home/back button, volume rockers, a power/lock button, a standard 3.3mm jack for headphones (compatible with headphones with microphone and buttons) and a charger port (probably micro USB).

It will hopefully have some form of an app store with at first basic games/apps if proven to be popular I will consist of popular and new coming apps. If this idea is produced in the near future ideas could escalate into and idea for an everyday tablet for all ages.

This piece of equipment would be useful to me because I would be able to use it to its limits and hopefully make the Raspberry Pi more popular than it already is.

I'm currently working on a Very Low Power FM broadcast station for my little community here on the coast of Oregon.. we will use it for public access and community related affairs that don't get proper air time, if any, now..  The RasPi B+ would be the main control device for the station, routing feeds, etc..

I am very involved with iPhone photography but I am running out of space. I would love using the RaspberryPi B+ for a three mile range cloud server using Dropbox, Xbee and other components to upload pictures that I have taken near my house. The more headers the better!
