Extra raspberry sauce: The great Raspberry Pi B+ giveaway

15 Jul 2014

You may have heard that there’s a new Pi in town. The Raspberry Pi B+ launched on July 14th 2014, the first major update to the credit card sized computer that changed so much in the world of electronics when it first launched two years ago.

We wanted to make sure that our element14 Community members and social media followers had the chance to be among the first to get their hands on it. So, we decided to give 100 away. We couldn’t just go out on the street and hand them out to anyone and everyone! We wanted to put the new Pis directly into the hands of our members and followers, on launch day, so we needed some kind of secret code!

That’s why early on the morning of the launch, we started spreading the word. On all of our social media channels we posted messages letting people know that there would be element14 ice cream huts in central London today. They were giving out free ice cream to everyone but, if you knew the secret code word, you could become the recipient of more than just a tasty treat. The first 100 people to find the element14 ice cream huts and ask for ‘extra raspberry sauce’ with their ice cream became some of the first people in the world to get their hands on a brand new Raspberry Pi B+. We tweeted using the hashtag #extraraspberry throughout the day, with these being a few of the best tweets and pictures.

Now, we appreciate that many of you couldn’t possibly get to central London with only a few hours notice (or even a few days). The element14 Community is global, so we want to give everyone the chance to get hold of a free Raspberry Pi B+ early on. For that reason, we’ve held back another 10 to give away. To be in with a chance of getting one, just comment on this blog post and tells us in under 50 words the first project you would put your new Pi B+ to use on. We’re especially interested in hearing about projects that make use of the new board’s better connectivity and power features.

I was at Westminster very recently I missed this by a week! I hope you got to do some touristy stuff afterwards too. The weather was nice - London and the team looks good!

I would build a telescope mount controller with this RPi B+.   The RPi NOIR would be used as a camera fitted to the telescope and the processing power of the Pi would go into getting the astrometric solution to the astronomical images taken by the telescope + RPiNOIR.   The GPIO would be used for controlling the 2 axis servos needed to point the telescope in different directions and also to interface with incremental encoders.  The USB modules would be used thusly:  1.  For GPS connectivity.  2. For a good quality science grade CCD camera.  3. Additional storage to store the files needed to solve for the telescope pointing.  4.  touchscreen for human interfacing with the 'scope.   I envision an onscreen keyboard thus negating the need for a separate keyboard/mouse.   The compactness of the solution would make it a great setup to fly on a balloon for moderate sized telescopes for scientific research...  raspberrysauce

I'd take my son on a journey of discovery (for us both) to better learn Linux commands, and see what the mind of a 7 year old boy could dream up.

I actually live in Westminster, MD, USA.... so I must have gotten my directions wrong :/

First project for this would be to streamline my home theater system. The added USB ports and lower power draw will help me remove the USB HUB, everything would be able to go through the Pi. Less junk I need next to the TV.

use the extra power and USB to configure a WiFi Access Point/Router for a local co-working space (multiple USB wifi adaptors for multiple networks and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks).

I made some experiments with the orignal Model B, but due to all the extra USB power draws, it was a bit un-reliable, and was starting to cost a bit much and look kind of ugly!

I haven't worked out how to so this yet - but I'm confident that the extra GPIO pins and lower power consumption will play a key part in my Invisible Man Detector.

As is clear from the 5th photo in the blog post ... one is needed.
