Extra raspberry sauce: The great Raspberry Pi B+ giveaway

15 Jul 2014

You may have heard that there’s a new Pi in town. The Raspberry Pi B+ launched on July 14th 2014, the first major update to the credit card sized computer that changed so much in the world of electronics when it first launched two years ago.

We wanted to make sure that our element14 Community members and social media followers had the chance to be among the first to get their hands on it. So, we decided to give 100 away. We couldn’t just go out on the street and hand them out to anyone and everyone! We wanted to put the new Pis directly into the hands of our members and followers, on launch day, so we needed some kind of secret code!

That’s why early on the morning of the launch, we started spreading the word. On all of our social media channels we posted messages letting people know that there would be element14 ice cream huts in central London today. They were giving out free ice cream to everyone but, if you knew the secret code word, you could become the recipient of more than just a tasty treat. The first 100 people to find the element14 ice cream huts and ask for ‘extra raspberry sauce’ with their ice cream became some of the first people in the world to get their hands on a brand new Raspberry Pi B+. We tweeted using the hashtag #extraraspberry throughout the day, with these being a few of the best tweets and pictures.

Now, we appreciate that many of you couldn’t possibly get to central London with only a few hours notice (or even a few days). The element14 Community is global, so we want to give everyone the chance to get hold of a free Raspberry Pi B+ early on. For that reason, we’ve held back another 10 to give away. To be in with a chance of getting one, just comment on this blog post and tells us in under 50 words the first project you would put your new Pi B+ to use on. We’re especially interested in hearing about projects that make use of the new board’s better connectivity and power features.

Get commenting to enter and we'll pick the winners next Wednesday July 23rd at 9am UK time (Terms and Conditions apply)

    My project would be: pair the Raspberry Pi with a Camera Board and place it in my parents bird aviary

    • timelapse the birth of new parakeet and /or cockatiel babies during nesting season;
    • monitor the daily on-goings in the bird aviary (doubles also for security purposes);
    • send/recieve data via wireless adapter.

    I have two projects awaiting for a pi:

    - media center: actual usb ports are giving me problems

    - home automation: model B has less gpio and usb than I need. Less power consumption i salso good, since it will be running 24/7.

    I’ll probably start with the second project.

    A community project I'm currently involved with is trying to create a simple, fully automated, and cheap way for amateur astronomers to create photometric data of variable stars and exoplanets. I think we would benefit immensely from the upgraded form factor and additional USB's!

    Currently I am designing IoT based River Water Pollution Monitoring System with RasiPiB+. I will be going to interface TDS,EC and other water pollution sensors with RasiPiB+ via Long range ZigBee modules. Sensors nodes in say 1kM x 1kM area talks with RasiPiB+ via ZigBee. RasiPiB+ collects this data and sends it to Plotly via internet connection through Wifi router/ Ethernet.

    I'll make a software defined radio by coupling rPi B+ with RTL2832U demodulator. I have used an usrp few months ago and became a fan of it, but owning a usrp is still a dream because of it's cost.

    With the additional USB ports in B+, I'll be able to hook my keyboard, mouse and Freeview P250 dongle( USB ) at the sametime without an external USB hub. Also the new power management features will ensure a reliable operation of the USB radio chip.

    If anybody wants to build the same, you can find more details here : A $40 Software-Defined Radio - IEEE Spectrum

    A second part of modified design for sub 50Mhz frequencies is available at Software-Defined Radio, Part II - IEEE Spectrum
