Graspio - IoT for non programmer #2

15 Mar 2020

this is sequel to my first blog last week at GraspIO - IoT for non programmer - Part #1

I have to say after much troubleshooting i got the raspbio to work

By right graspio mention it will have dc motor control, but it has not happened yet. hence i use a motor driver to drive the motor instead, and graspio is merely providing control signal

to turn on and off

image

however, i felt it has few drawback

-not supported on raspberry pi 3B+ . luckily i manage to grab hold of a raspberry pi 1A to test. what's frustrating on graspio website it mention raspberry pi 3 is supported...causing

me hours of troubleshooting

-one of the IO pin seems spoilt.....may be i am really non programmer and has fried it accidentally, but somehow i never get it to work

it is only after much headache i decide to change to another port then everything seems working

-the hotspot twinkle never works and very frustrating

-even wifi twinkle is depending on the wifi that we connect to.

my experiment is nothing fancy, but just a simple program to let it turn on and off an motor, change the picture on the LCD screen, and light up the LED, and make some noise

however, considering that i am a chemical engineer by training, this is fun enough. But i do find the graspio is not as easy as it claim to be

image

my super simple programming. the programming itself is fun and easy but getting the hardware setup to reach this stage is a nightmare. i had wanted

to showcase this to my primary school daughter and son, and get them do it, but after the hassle i give up. perhaps i should revisit it in the future but i can see that graspio has got

no update for long time (more than a year). some feature like dc motor control also never occurs.

it looks like it is a close source project. https://www.grasp.io/ in fact there is roadtest on this device by element14 previously i do refer to some of the roadtest during troubleshooting and one roadtester…

A shame, but that occurs more often than not. Probably the author moved on to other things and never finished. Is the source available for someone else to carry the torch? Clem

I agree, I have one and it sounds very nice, but never decided to put it in a project because it consumes a Raspberry pi (2 and 3, not 3B+ !!!), has its own Linux version and is all closed. With the lack…

I never believe anyone when they say something is easy. It's only easy when you know how to do it. It is the not knowing part that is difficult and generally not the thing/system itself. Once you know how, then it is easy! So, so far I think IoT is difficult because I do not know how to do it, but one day, when I do know IoT then it will be easy. The IoT will not have changed, I will have changed.

One of my pains – together with using a dedicated OS not sure who maintain it and this is another reasonable worry at the actual date – is that hardware is no longer stocked in all the Farnell sites... There is no hope that someone support this device.

I don't recall everything I got when I studied this board, but it seems good hardware, to me. As far as I know, it not very difficult to hack and control with the normal Raspbian Linux if someone – considering the state-of-the-art of this device – can provide the cloud access documentation at least.

I agree, I have one and it sounds very nice, but never decided to put it in a project because it consumes a Raspberry pi (2 and 3, not 3B+!!!), has its own Linux version and is all closed. With the lack of documentation and some issues like those mentioned, I can't consider trustable.
