What do you want to do/see done on the pi 4?

gam3t3ch
gam3t3ch over 6 years ago

I am having so much fun with the Pi 4 as my desktop and finding alternatives and different things to do with it is such an easy task.

I thought I would see what other people would like to either do with a pi 4 or see done with it.

Personally I have it setup as a little studio which is working great.  I am running the following

Raspberry Pi 4 (2GB) with 5v fan

Single monitor with built in speakers viewsonic – vs11444

Logtech 920 Webcam

Behringer Xenyx Q502 USB / Neewer NW – 700

USB Powered 2.0 Hub (7port)

External SSD Drive as main boot drive Kingston 120gb

Testing power consumption over a 1 month period Leaving the unit powered on the whole time and only using powered mixer when recording only but will be plugged in for the start of the test.

I still need to run some better speakers for doing some music editing which will be coming shortly into the mix as well.

That is my current setup and have plans for more with it as it seems to be preforming better then I had expected.  Will have to get the 4gb version soon as well.

So with that all being said who else is using the pi4 as a desktop?

And have you replaced your desktop yet completely?

What kind of projects or ideas would you suggest for making the pi desktop better?

What would you do or want to see be done with the pi 4?

Get back to developing a greater understanding of GNURadio.

I redlined the Pi3B+ using GNURadio to demodulate an FM signal. I'm curious to compare the performance against a Pi$.

Dunno what could be so complex about demodulating FM, was it stereo or mono?

I agree with you that doing some SDR with the pi could be fun. But getting weather sat images would be more interesting!

I believe it is more of exploring the way waves on GNUradio reflect and modulate especially at night. Maybe something else. But I see a wealth of things to learn and play with.

That is my opinion of course. neuromodulator any comments of your usage?

Sorry, I got lost on what you were referring in your comment. Sean apparently had GNUradio suck all his computational resources when demodulating FM, that's what I found surprising.
Now on the usage I was referring to downloading NOAA or GOES sat images. NOAA sats transmit images around 137 Mhz and a DIY antenna can be built without investing much money on it. GOES sats transmit at around 1680 Mhz, are stationary and their images are of very high resolution, the rig is more expensive too, it requires a parabolic antenna, some filtering and some LNAs, but the images are just amazing. Here is a nice link: https://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-com-goes-16-17-and-gk-2a-weather-satellite-reception-comprehensive-tutorial/

I tried weather sat images on the pi2 a while back it worked well but certainly could have been better might be something to revisit on the pi4 for sure.

Probably maxed out the memory just loading it in the FM decoding was the least of the problems....

Also running in GRC no doubt burnt more resources!

I would also like to know if the GNU Radio install for the PI is just a lift and shift or have they made an effort to use VOLK and all the optimised math libs??
