Background to problem:
I recently signed up to Virgin Media 200Mb broadband which kept dropping to around 5-8mb from 6pm onwards (sometimes lower). After a number of phone calls resulting in nothing but lost time with the virgin media team I came across a pretty neat guide, on how to use a raspberry pi as a broadband speed monitor using Loggly.
Loggly allows you to upload system log files and then interpret them as a nice graph. (with only minor tweaking)

As suspected virgin media have oversubscribed the line so at peak times I get around 5% of the quoted 200Mb speed 
The raspberry pi is plugged in via an ethernet cable directly into the router, but appears to max out at around 50Mb.
Still pretty cool and a nice use for the raspberry pi.
