Quick-and-Dirty Embedded MCU Functions?

I wonder if the software that comes with it makes it easy to exercise the GPIOs, including conditional branching, capturing the time of an input, and doing PWM outputs.  If so, this module could be used to prove a concept in a larger system.  Students could slap one of these into a project knowing that if anyone wants to make more than one of these they'd replace the Rasberry Pi with some low-cost embeeded MCU.  But this would be a quick and dirty way to get a lot of processing power to prove a concept.  I'm curious how well the software that comes loaded on the board lends itself to these "embedded MCU" type functions.

    I'm very interested in exploring that to.  The RPi really excites me as it seems to blend a full Linux environment with the GPIO I'm used to on microcontrollers.

     

    I noticed that in the Gertboard video that it appears the GPIO port can be accessed via /sys:

    I think being able to access pins from the filesystem abstraction is really powerful.  That means that any language that can run on Linux can interact with the physical world - heck I can even blink LEDs and flip on motors from the shell.

     

    I'm not sure what the full capabilities beyond basic digital input and output on those pins are.  Hopefully there is a way to tap PWM and other common features found on a microcontroller.  Since there is SPI and I2C, external chips could be used for functions like ADC and DAC if no builtin option.

    I  predict the R-Pi will be in countless senior design projects.

     

    I could have used in in my own. I ended up using a similar, but less featured, dev board instead.
