Raspberry Pi: As A lark?

DaveYoung

I first heard about the Raspberry Pi system when travelling with a friend who already is drooling over the device.  After hearing his sales pitch, I didn't have any specific ideas of what I would do with one, or even how I would approach the new tech.  But one thought prevailed in my mind:

'At $35 for the fully loaded device, why not get one and see where it goes?'

It is true, that there is a significant chance that I'll put it in a drawer next to all of the other projects I've thought about building.  But there is an equally good chance that I'll come up with an idea with no boundaries, no deadlines, and no customer constraints that could really turn heads.

It's a starting point for passion that I think gives this product it's strength.  People think 'Why not?' and find themselves immersed in the project.  Legos for grown-ups.  Does anyone else feel this way?

The phrase Legos for grownups made me think of when electronics was a 50-in-1 electronics kit that I thought of as a toy.  It's really nice that I have a job playing with these things, but it's not the same as when it was an avocation.  Buying a kit wouldn't be sufficient to get that feeling back, but maybe if I have time between contracts I could take some time playing with something like this.  Unlike playing with an MSP430 or PIC, with Raspberry Pi or Arduino you can start doing things without doing a lot of work (in the sense of what I normally do for money).

I just so happen to be reading the book "Drive", which deals with how when you do something for money it can take away part of the fun and make you not as productive.

The one thing that reliably reminds me of electronics being an avocation is watching my 3 y/o's ham-handed manipulations of an electronics kit I bought a year ago.  He was amazed we could make a light blink and I think a little confused that we could pick up a local AM radio station just by connecting the parts the right way.

I am not at a point where I have time for a new toy, but I love the thought of this being the toy for some 9 y/o kid.
