Who needs Video and Audio out when you have HDMI?

Former Member

Do we really need to waste space on the board with the the video and audio out?  Sure some people may want thus but most won't.  What about a version of the board that has only HDMI, Network and of course USB?

EDIT  I'm not suggesting that they scrap the version with sound and video out, lots of people will want this. I am just hoping for a version without them which will be much smaller unit.

Because the composite video and analog audio out support is already built into the chip.  Basically the only significant cost of supporting those connections was adding the plugs.

It is true, lots of people will need the s-video (or whatever it is) but lots won't so I'd like to see a different board configuration that excludes these outputs.

I saw (youtube) a version of the board that was the size of a flash-stick but it had HDMI and NO network...

Personally, I'd like to see the board so small you can fit it in a match-box and stick 4 of these into a USB powered hub and network them into a cluster and have some real fun image

Many people will use analog audio. What about headphones? image

Sure, someone could develop very narrow-use versions of the board, but fewer people are going to be interested in the less adaptable board, so it's going to be more expensive - maybe two or three times more expensive because the manufacture costs for small runs goes way up. You'll still be able to use the board even if it includes outs for analog video and audio, eh? If you want to prohibit people from using those ports on your build, don't put holes for them in your project box. Problem solved for most people.

More different models = less ability to mass order = higher price per unit!

If you watch the video's where they explain the specs, he says, "If you don't have an HDMI port and have an older montor, you have the older video and audio ports." These were not originally made for the average user. They are made for schools with little money and old equipement. Be happy there is even an HDMI port on the card.

HDMI can be used to drive a DVI-D computer monitor (which many of us have) through an inexpensive cable, but DVI-D does not include audio so RasPi needs a separate audio output.

Composite video is intended primarily for students who cannot afford an HDMI monitor or TV, but may have access to a cheap or free CRT TV with composite video input through an RCA jack.  Since so many people have switched to LCD TVs, used working CRT TVs are plentiful.

Composite video may also be useful with small CRTs for people who want to make a portable computer out of a RasPi.
