Post Pi Launch Snag List (questions not venting)

Hi,

As the main Pi site is down currently I thought it might be useful, at least for me, to ask some questions on what I think needs clarifying post release. Yes I was disappointed and frustrated the release didn't go as smooth as it could have but I expect there has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes and that will be overlooked for the few things that caused problems. Also despite all those complaining I expect most of us will still buy one at the first opportunity!

Anyway on with my list;

Farnell

  • I am slightly confused over the pricing that has been applied as I have managed to order two (yes I know but I assume they aren't for the first batch) one was at £26.55 + VAT and the other at £24.55 + VAT (only ordered the 2nd due to the lower price expecting to cancel the first). Which is the correct price and will the incorrect price be adjusted automatically?
  • Some people appear to be charged an additional £6.50 for telephone orders. Will that charge continue to be applied in the future and if it is then is it clear that it is not necessary and would not apply if ordering from the website?
  • You appear to be including shipping in the base price. Why can't you split out the delivery charge because if, in the future, I want to order multiple Pi's and accessories then I only want to pay for one shipping charge?
  • Is there anyway to get to the information that was in pdf attachments to the order confirmation email via the account portal as I can't seem to find them? My account was originally using an old email that I no longer have access to and I don't be able to see this information on the portal.

RS

  • In my experience RS detest the public and think they are above us mere peasants. Or at least thats the impression they have always given me and the way they have made me feel in the past. Due to this I have always given my trade to other much more friendly companies such as Farnell. As this isn't a venting thread my question is whether RS have now seen the light and will allow us non-trade customers to buy Pi's from their website. (my heart sank when I saw RS were a supplier and even the register interest form had a mandatory "Company" field which has now been made optional)
  • RS don't appear to have sold any as yet so are we right to assume they have ~5000 to sell in the next few days?
  • For those that registered an interest were we supposed to get any confirmation from the RS website?
  • If they do have ~5000 to sell in the next few days then how do they intend to do this fairly and to stop a meltdown of their website?
  • How much will RS charge for shipping and/or will we be allowed to pick them up from their trade counters?

Paypal - Originally it was stated Paypal would be able to be used for purchase and to the best of my knowledge neither Farnell or RS are able to do this. Will that be the same going forward?

Overseas Friends - I think it would be good to confirm to our overseas friends exactly how much the Pi's will cost including shipping to ensure expectations are set correctly.

Further Manufacturing Batches - To help set expectations it would be good to understand the future ramp up of production and in particular the relation to the estimated delivery dates e.g. I have a delivery date for the end of April ..... so is that batch 2, 3 or 4?

That's all I can think of for now. It would be great if anyone can shed some light on this or add anything to this thread on what you think you would like some clarification on.

Cheers

Rob

5000? Try 900!  It would appear that that is all that was allocated in the UK distribution for RS, according to the people on their switch board earlier on.

Wow only 900! I wonder if that is because they have split their first allocation globally? I guess it will give our overseas friends a chance to get one if that is the case.

Not many, is it?  I am amazed at how popular they are, the woman on the phone even told me she had put an order in for her son who is at school, good lass!  She was really nice by the way, so their website failed but the folk there didn't.  My first impression of them has gone up as a consequence of my chat, and she didn't seem to be in a rush to finish the call which was a nice surprise!

Here in Australia, both RS and E-14 provide 'free' freight if orders are placed online, with a charge for phone or faxed orders.

The price here is AU$38.00 + 10%GST which I think is reasonable considering they fix their exchange rate for one year against the pound, not the US$, so the slight increase in price offsets the delivery by Toll couriers which is an overnight service.

RS on the other hand (I remember when they didn't like selling to the public in the UK and had to go through Electrovalue for orders) have decided to set the price here at a much higher price (over AU$50). The Aus website for RS didn't list the item until yesterday (2/3/2012).

It would be nice to have some idea when stock is expected, when I placed the order it stated 38 days, but that might have been a default period, and as ordering is now suspended there is now no indicator of possible time, the confirmation email has no times.

I assume they will collate the orders for AU/NZ and either get part of the batch diverted directly from China, or as normally is the case, it'll go to the UK and then brought back out here.

I had thought the original 10K batch would still go to R-Pi and once E-14 and RS had started dispatching their production, R-Pi would again make them available as well through their shop allowing PayPal etc.

I was hoping for a berry pi mid March image
