SD/SDHC card class and Linux size

I've searched the element 14 site and didn't find anything about the suggested class of the SD/SDHC card. Also, what is the Linux OS size? I've never designed an embedded system using a standard OS and would like to know how much memory it takes up so I have a feeling as to what to expect when coding for my project. I've done mostly 8051 derivative work in assembler.

Avoid class 10 cards for now as there is currently a bug that stops the GPU booting the OS from them.

As to size it depends on the distribution. You could have a complete desktop and development environment taking a few gig or strip a system down to kernel and busybox and a few bins for something embedded and fit it in a fraction of that.

Suggestion is over 2 Gb, but personally I'm going for 4, more space for additional stuff later on, multi purpose etc.

On the RPi wiki, there is some information about cards that have worked and been tested if you want a starting point.

So looks like my plan won't work with using a Hoodman Raw Steel Secure Digital High Capacity Memory Card won't work seeing as though it operates above speed class 10 specs.
