I think the ARM Cortex-A5 is compatiable... [granted i have little knowledge]
Any idea how it would affect the price/performance? (+in its Single / dual / and quad core variants? Roughly?)

well, for desktop computing, a modern cpu and more memory would be hugely attractive.
It might even attract the interest of the Ubuntu and Android folks, and certainly would simplify
gcc toolchain issues. I would be very surprised if it isn't already being investigated, since
Broadcom has more modern ARM cpu's available.
A quick and simple improvement would be for the foundation (or one of the licencees) to offer versions with more RAM. While I understand the education target market is price sensitive I think it has become clear that the Raspberry Pi has broader interest and the limited memory is going to be a killer for some applications.
I just want to get my hands one of the 'standard' raspberries, let alone think about an expanded version !
I think this has proved there would be pretty big interest, but i'm not sure how much could be included and still keep the price very low. There are obviously things like the Beagleboard out there already, which haven't caused anywhere near the level of interest that this has, is the only difference the price ?
These be interesting times !
As I would really like to see an board with more power , i really think it is not going be made by the foundation.
My arguments are :
So if you want a better Raspi , wait for a company. They will propably provide
Because they might be motivated by the idea of making profit being the one with the competitive price.
So did you see the new Roku ? It only costs $50. And its an device that only fulfils one purpose.
Or wait for the next BeagleBone , CuBox , Cotton Candy or whatever.
Prices range from 89 – 189 $.
You might have a look at Rhombus-Techs project. They still create the impression of providing an Raspi alternative at a $15 (blatantly written on the front page) soon. Some kind of misinformation and wishful misinterpretation I bet I will never come to know of a real company.

PS: This company could be anybody. I think we already have 3 candidates ....
