Raspberry Pi emulating the ZX Spectrum

I just saw a tweet from Andy Taylor linking to his post on getting his Raspberry Pi to run the Fuse ZX Spectrum Emulator:

Anyone have fond memories of the ZX Spectrum that they are looking forward to rekindling?

    Got to be Manic Miner first, then Zzoom, then pretty much anything by Imagine.

     

    For real authenticity, do we get to run the emulator, then type in pages of poorly typeset code from a magazine, only to find it doesn't work, because next month they print a whole page of errata?

  • All I remember was my INK$ key got all rubbed out programming "Warlocks of Firetop Mountain".  The Spectum changed my world. But that was a long time ago. I am hoping that the Raspi gives the kids today what the Spectrum gave me.

  • Ah, Warlock of Firetop Mountain -  Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks were great.

     

    It did look a little slow, perhaps they haven't fully managed to get the graphics chip to do the screen stuff, I understand that in the distributions they are putting out the graphical acceleration isn't working / working properly yet ?

     

    Makes you think how far we have come though - a tiny machine, no larger than a credit card, with enough oomph to emulate another computer,  that only costs £25 or so image If you could zoom back 20 years and take one of these with you, would anyone beleive it ?

    Emulation looked fine to me - the game Fred actually WAS slow and jerky, on a real Spectrum, and continues to be so when emulated on much more capable hardware than the Pi - try it for yourselves!

  • Since you show interest for MAME and Spectrum you should also look for Mednafen: http://mednafen.sourceforge.net/

     

    I only used it for GBA but it claims that it emulates Atari Lynx, Famicom, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, Neo Geo Pocket Color, NES, PC Engine, PC-FX and WonderSwan Color.

     

    You could use cd images in an usb drive. You could use the actual cd in an usb optical reader but that would be nonsense, unless you don't have access to another computer with enough memory to make an image of the physical cd.
