What is the *expected* Element14 response to expression of interest?

morgaine
morgaine over 13 years ago

I've been here on Element14 since November 2011, as eager to get my hands on an Rpi as everybody else.

I registered my interest with Element 14 within the launch week, (I avoided the chaos of the first few days on purpose.)  What's more, I screen-capped the confirmation screen at the time,  Expecting everything to be fine, I sat back and patiently waited for the email that the confirmation screen said was coming soon.

And waited and waited ... nothing arrived in the mail at all.  Yes, I did check the spam folder regularly as well as the inbox, and yes, the email address is correct (as I said, I took a screen cap, just in case, and of course I have since checked and rechecked that everything was indeed correct)..

After nearly a fortnight of waiting, and noticing that many people have received a confirmation email, I filled in the same form again, and included a note about my earlier registration.  (Again it was successful, and I took a screen cap of this registration too.)  And waited, and waited.

Another week has passed, and still nothing.

Knock, knock .... is anybody there?  HELLO??????

I'm a UK customer of Farnell, and they give me *PERFECT* service, with immediate response. This Element 14 response is certainly not that.

What should have happened?   What do I do now?  It's like talking to a black hole.

Is this zero response correct, or should I have received an acknowledgement email?  [ANSWER FROM Element 14 STAFF PLEASE.]

Yours sincerely frustrated,

Morgaine.

    Hi Morgaine,

Sorry for the delay in response to this thread - we've been able to track down a response to your question and were able to confirm that not all of the emails have yet been sent for our European registered customers. However, all who are registered should receive emails by the end of THIS week.

We hope this clears up any confusion - and please let us know if you do not receive your email by the end of this week.

Thank you for letting us know and hope this helps image

    Thank you Nicole!!!! image

That's exactly what I wanted, a precise answer to remove the ambiguity.  Whether the answer was Yes or No regarding email ACK expected to be sent was secondary, but your "Yes, soon" was much more helpful than a No would have been.

Waiting the week out patiently. image

I sincerely hope that Morgaine, together with many other prospective customers, will indeed received their promised emails later this week, but I also hope that no one is actually waiting to receive theirs before placing an order for a Raspberry Pi.

My understanding is that at the moment they are not actually in the 'delivery queue' at all, and will not join it until Farnell/Unit 14 receive a formal order from them.

Then, and only then, will they be given an estimated delivery date which, as things stand at the moment may not be until August.

If my assumptions here are NOT correct, I would be please to hear the true facts.

It does look though as if (now that the first few production units have actually left the factory) a further update on the supply/delivery situation will be given by the Foundation, on their website, later todayt, which should be interesting.

That's actually yet another good question (or two) to add to Element 14's FAQ:

    • Does "registering your interest" place you in the 1-per-person entitlement queue?
    • If it does not, then what is the official web link for placing oneself in that queue?

Note that attempting to order via the Farnell website, either by searching for "Raspberry Pi" directly or by drilling down to find it in the MCU development tools section, always leads to the Element 14 "register your interest" page, so there is no official website way to place oneself in the queue other than this.

I used to have a direct link to the product on Farnell's pages during the first week after launch, but they replaced that Rpi page with this redirect to Element 14.

I hope Nicole is monitoring this thread for useful additions to their FAQ.

I've just noticed that RS actually answers the above question explicitly in their own FAQ.

I won't paste the link nor their text here because they're Farnell's commercial rival and it might make someone unhappy, but I'll summarize it in my own words: "Yes, your registration of interest is time-stamped and places you in our first-come, first-served queue."

Thanks for the feedback Morgaine, but I don't really think that RS have really said what the queue is actually for, although they imply that it is just for "the opportunity to place an order". However I don't think that anyone has been able to actually do this yet, as all we can do at present (four weeks after the 'launch'!) is still only to 'register an interest'.

Farnell/Element 14 however were (and hopefully still are) taking orders, plus credit card details from customers, and are then giving them what is in effect an order confirmation number which, as I see it anyway, will determine the sequence in which the boards will be despatched, once they are eventually released from manufacture and testing or whatever.

That is my understanding of the situation anyway.

Mind you, they are currently quoting a 'Supplier lead time' of 135 days, which assuming that means business working days, (of which there are only 5 in a week) means 27 week, or 22.5 if there are 6 working days in their week, although that is hopefully only for new orders, and will not apply to those that were placed three, or more weeks ago.

You can't be in any delivery queue, because there is nothing to be delivered. The Foundation and Farnell change their story every week. The FAQ answers everything, but not the frequently asked questions:

    Do they exist?

    Did you have any?

    Do you have any now?

    When will you have any?

    How many do you have?

    How many will you have?

How many more excuses will you come up with?

How reliable are the announced shipping dates?

    And also important:

Do you finally have your system under control?

Do you especially have your strange subsidiaries under control who seem to be completely unwilling and out of control?
