See Raspberry Pi Boards ready to leave the factory

Sabrina
Sabrina over 14 years ago

Click here http://www.raspberrypi.org/ to see pictures of the first 2000  Raspberry Pi’s in the final stages of production at the  factory in China. These have now shipped and are with Raspberry Pi in the UK awaiting the outcome of compliance testing to gain the necessary approvals to enable us to start shipping.

Watch here for further delivery news.

Thank you so much for the information. I'm sure I'm not the first to think, but I'll ask first.

Are these 2000 part of the original 10000 that have been reworked or are they a new production batch?  If they are the original, are more batches in production?

Thanks for your question. These are the first batch of the newly reworked boards with the correct components. Further deliveries are being held awaiting the outcome of the compliance testing so that any adjustments can be made at the factory. Once compliance is acheived we expect subsequent deliveries quickly.

    Kevin,

This news of 2000 arriving (actually I think it is 1950 working ones out of 2000 built) is consistent with the 05 March Inquirer interview with Eben,   http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2157021/raspberry-pi-pcs-served-april where he says "a very small number" of sample devices have arrived in the UK, with 2000 more imminent, and 10000 (actually I think he meant 8000) expected in mid to late April.

Today Eben says it was "quite an emotional moment" to unwrap the pallet. That indicates to me that he hadn't recently unwrapped a similar pallet of boards, which is consistent with the Inquirer story that only a few samples had arrived. The remaining 8000 apparently have yet to be built, as they weren't planned to be shipped to the UK until mid to late April.  Since adding the ethernet jack is believed to be one of the last production steps, it isn't plausible that there are 8000 boards already built with the wrong ethernet jack that are in process of rework.  JamesH has recanted his claim that 10000 were built and in transit. Beyond the first 10000, apparently some parts have been ordered, but production hasn't begun.

Funny as hell how the "official truth" keeps changing,  I wonder how the fanbois are going to spin this one.  They really don't understand that the Foundation is using mushroom management on the community --- "Keep them in the dark, feed them ***, and watch them grow".

It's good that this update seems reasonably factual ... until the next change, that is.

The explanation James gives is pretty funny:

    http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/781  (March 8, 2012 at 2:00 pm)

"Sorry, I'd made an assumption on shipping from something I heard

from a bloke in the pub who said he'd once met Eben in a massage

parlour in Amsterdam.  Or something like that."

Well it's all going downhill rapidly.  Now Liz has posted a forum thread expressly designed to incite hatred there -- http://www.raspberrypi.org/forum/general-discussion/concern-trolling .  People with concerns can't even politely express them over there anymore without being labelled trolls with Foundation approval.  I've never really seen anything like it before.

The Foundation has become the exact opposite of an open, caring, even-handed community organization.  How can this work in the context of education?  It can't, unless you're educating prison inmates.  The target audience requires tolerance and understanding, lots of it, and lessening of tensions through calm diplomacy, not increasing tension by calling people names.

    @ Morgaine,

I think the problem with the Pi project is that they are totally out of their depth - so much so that they don't realise when they are talking nonsense. In the link at the top of this thread Sabrina talks about being "awarded" a CE mark which demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the legislation. I don't think there is any bad intent although some of the responses (from the RPiF) have been a bit weird.

In a way the whole project is a good lesson to everyone involved, (customers and RS/Farnell as well as RPiF)

Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. (Thomas Eddison)

Or to put it annother way - the design is only a small part of the product - all those people in production and QA and sales etc etc get paid for  a reason.

So, although I won't order one until Farnell have stock, I hope they'll get it sorted - with so much interest and support it should be possible.

    Michael Kellett
