dd-removable not recognised

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Having downloaded the dd.exe file from Element14, placed it into a suitable directory and used command line  - as suggested by Eben Upton's introductory video - as follows:

>dd-removable --list

I get:""  'dd-removable' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Thanks in advance

The executable wasn't archived properly and needs to be renamed.

Open a command prompt and go into the folder where "dd.exe" resides and then type:

    C:\> ren dd.exe, dd-removable.exe

    Then retry your command.

p.s. you can run dd.exe as-is; it will just show you all drives, not just the removable ones.

    Many thanks jmstratton!

Using your suggestion I managed to retrieve the required details of the removable media drive for loading Debian onto an SD card.

I'm now trying to come to terms with another piece of Eben Upton's video, namely the command line instruction to load a Debian image onto my SD card.

    I think it reads:

dd-removable bs=1M if=sd.img of =\\?\Device\Harddisk1\Partition0 --progress  (I've entered the Harddisk No. and Partition No. for my machine).

There's plenty of scope for errors here. Have I got it right? If I put the Debian image in the same folder as dd-removable, will it work? I suspect that the '?' is to be replaced by the path to the Debian image. if so, how is the path expressed?

I think Eben Upton's estimate that you can be up and running, playing with Python and C etc in an hour from opening the box is totally unrealistic, unless you happen to be an official nerd.

    Thanks in advance

I burst out in laughter at that.  Lucky that my cup of coffee wasn't being drunk at the time. image

    Morgaine

I like to make someone laugh every day. It was your turn!

Seriously, one can be up a creek in a barbed wire canoe very quickly in this Raspberry Pi community. I don't yet have nerdic powers that enable me to feel what's right and what's wrong.

    ;-)

Yes, that command line looks correct, including the question marks; they're fine.  And yes, you should put the Debian image "sd.img" in the same folder.

I just wanted to add to this - rather than mess around with dd(-removable) - Ubuntu's image writer tool should be able to help with this:

jms and Tom Mann have been doing a great job for me, and many others I'm sure. But this is to let you know that I have discovered Win32DiskImager which actually has a user-friendly interface.

Only one question left: Why would Eben want to put us 'non-nerds' through the torture of trying to use the dd thingy, when there are applications designed for the task?

    Many thanks
