USB and LAN ports not working

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

I received my Raspberry Pi today, but unfortunately neither the USB ports or the LAN port appear to be working.

I have tried numerous low power USB devices like keyboards mice etc. but can't get any life out of them, although I am able to charge my phone from the ports. Same results using two different 2A adapters to power the Pi and with a powered USB hub.Tried connecting the LAN port but the light on the router indicating a device is attached did not come on.

I've tried Debian, Arch and Fedora from RaspberrPi.org and also tried the kernel update which I believe is to address a different issue with USB. At this stage I'm fairly sure there is a fault (LAN is connected through USB I believe?). I'll wait and see if anyone else reports similar problems, otherwise I think I'll have to return it.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has had a similar experience with theirs?

Thanks

Mark

Leave the LAN cable disconnected at the Pi end and just have the keyboard connected into the lower of the two USB ports and see if you progress any further. As John mentions, check the voltage between TP1 and TP2.

At the risk of unashamed advertising on behalf of our hosts here, I'm inclined to point out that Farnell's cheapest digital multimeter costs a mere UKP 7.46 + VAT ---> http://uk.farnell.com/tenma/72-7770/multimeter-digital/dp/7430566

That's nearly as revolutionary a price as the Raspberry Pi. image

Certainly nobody who buys a bare board should be without a multimeter when prices are this amazing.

In addition to the forums, where you can usually get help pretty quickly, there is a Raspberry Pi wiki with a troublshooting page here: http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting

Definitely, if you don't have a multimeter, I'd recommend getting one! Very useful for all sorts of things, especially if the R-Pi's GPIO pins tempt you to experiment with any electronics projects.

There is another report of USB trouble at:

    http://www.raspberrypi.org/forum/troubleshooting/my-pi-has-a-faulty-usb-port

That one is apparently missing a power pin on the USB port,

Although that problem is different, because it doesn't involve the LAN,

both reports seem to indicate some room for improvement in testing

    of the USB ports.

While it would be an interesting idea to add a multimeter to the RPi

accessory bundle, the purpose of the device isn't really to develop

    hardware diagnostic skills.

@coder27:  Developing hardware skills is one of the intended goals of the Pi.  If it were not, the Foundation folks could have saved themselves some layout effort and reduced the cost of the board still further by omitting the hardware interface lines altogether.  They didn't omit them, which suggests that their vision extended beyond mere software education.

    Morgaine,

Developing hardware skills may be one of the intended goals,

but you certainly aren't supposed to need any such skills to get

the device to boot.  Even though it comes without a case, it's supposed

to boot and operate as reliably as a cased device.  Any hardware skills you

develop would be for add-on hardware you might attach to the GPIO pins.
