USB and LAN ports not working

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

I received my Raspberry Pi today, but unfortunately neither the USB ports or the LAN port appear to be working.

I have tried numerous low power USB devices like keyboards mice etc. but can't get any life out of them, although I am able to charge my phone from the ports. Same results using two different 2A adapters to power the Pi and with a powered USB hub.Tried connecting the LAN port but the light on the router indicating a device is attached did not come on.

I've tried Debian, Arch and Fedora from RaspberrPi.org and also tried the kernel update which I believe is to address a different issue with USB. At this stage I'm fairly sure there is a fault (LAN is connected through USB I believe?). I'll wait and see if anyone else reports similar problems, otherwise I think I'll have to return it.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has had a similar experience with theirs?

Thanks

Mark

    Thanks for your replies

I have now tried 5 different power supplies (0.7A - 2A) and 5 different micro USB cables - each time with just HDMI and a single USB device connected (keyboard, mouse or flash drive etc.) with exactly the same result, except for one combination that occasionally hung during booting.

There is a brief flash from LEDs on the devices as you would expect when plugging them into a powered port but nothing else.

As it boots up it appears to detect and initialise USB and LAN devices.

I don't currently have a multimeter (my last died in mysterious circumstances *cough*) but if I get another what should I do with it? it would seem very unlikely that all my micro USB cables are bad but obviously not impossible

    Mark,

The troubleshooting link jbeale gave you, shows at the bottom of the page how to

use a multimeter to check the voltage between two test points, TP1 and TP2,

which should be within 5% of 5V.

But really it would be somewhat selfish to take the time to buy a multimeter

and try to debug this problem yourself.  Instead you should contact the foundation

and/or Farnell, and they should send a courier to pick up the device (along with

a replacement for you), so they can immediately determine the cause, and

prevent additional units from coming off the production line with the same

problem, given that they are rapidly ramping up the production rate.
