USB and LAN ports not working

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

I received my Raspberry Pi today, but unfortunately neither the USB ports or the LAN port appear to be working.

I have tried numerous low power USB devices like keyboards mice etc. but can't get any life out of them, although I am able to charge my phone from the ports. Same results using two different 2A adapters to power the Pi and with a powered USB hub.Tried connecting the LAN port but the light on the router indicating a device is attached did not come on.

I've tried Debian, Arch and Fedora from RaspberrPi.org and also tried the kernel update which I believe is to address a different issue with USB. At this stage I'm fairly sure there is a fault (LAN is connected through USB I believe?). I'll wait and see if anyone else reports similar problems, otherwise I think I'll have to return it.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has had a similar experience with theirs?

Thanks

Mark

First of all, sorry for my crappy English.

Just registered here to tell you I have exactly the same problem. The fact that the troubleshooting section on raspberrypi.org is full topics about usb and ethernet errors is a bit worrying.

I recieved mine from RS yesterday and helping their customers is not their top-priority. Is there anything i can do to troubleshoot? I do not have access to a multimeter.

Having no access to a multimeter is going to make testing difficult, but, visually checking to make sure all pads appear soldered and the  network connector has all it's pins inserted in the holes and soldered would be the first place to start.

    1. Do you get the power light showing?

    2. Any flashes from the other LED's at all?

    3. Are you using the analogue output or HDMI for video?

    4. What type of power adapter are you using including it's ratings?

5.What type and brand of SD Card are you using?

    6. Are you sure that the Linux image is on the SD Card and is not corrupted?

    7. Are you using an ethernet of WiFi connection, if ethernet,  does your router link LED light when connected to the Pi?

7a. If the power and Pi Link LED light, check that the SD Card is firmly inserted as far as it can go.

    8. Do you have access to any electronic components such as a white LED and resistors?  Reason for this question is you could make a very poor mans voltmeter with these two components. Do you have any small working torch bulbs handy?

Thank you very much for the help. I also hijacked another thread on the raspberry pi forums. (Scroll down to the bottom).

    http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=7533&sid=d28ea654bc776372f2a07381893b25ac

My pi worked for around 2 minutes after putting it in the fridge then the keyboard lights started to flicker and the ethernet connections was lost. During those 2 minutes everything worked fine so It's probably related to the X1 crystal.

    1. The power light works.

    2. The activity light flashes. And the Ethernet related LEDs worked after being cooled.

    3. I'm using HDMI.

    4. I have tried using 2 mobile phone chargers 700mAh and 1A. Same result.

    5. I have used both a no-name SD card and a brand new kingston class10 card.

    6. The image is fine.

    7. Ethernet only. No lights on the switch or the Pi except for when i tortured it in the fridge.

    8. Unfortunately not. image

I used a soldering iron and heated the crystal. The Pi works! (for now).

    Erik,

It looks like the lan chip has changed on recent models,

the numbers on the package are different.  Don't know

if that may account for the spate of recent problems with the crystal.

It's interesting that heat helps, at least temporarily as you say.

The Pi has been running for a full hour with ZERO problems. I hope it stays this way.

Also the lan chip becomes to hot to touch after a while, is that normal?

Other people have reported hot LAN chips here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=5898&hilit=LAN+chip+hot.  I don't know if it's "normal" -- lots of opinions in the thread on how to measure temperature digitally (i.e., with a finger) and whether it's cool to use heat sinks.
