Choosing an SD card

Somewhere I read that an SD card class 4 was required by the Raspberry Pi.  Would an SDHC Class 6 or higher class card work?  I am partial to SanDisk cards which I use with a high quality DSLR camera.

  • I have sandisk extreme II and extreme III cards. To my surprise these are marked class 4 and 6. These work.

     

    I just got my self an "insurance" SD card: a cheap 8G class-4 card.

     

    There used to be an issue with class 10 SD cards. That, as far as I can tell has been resolved. It's now just that the hardware cannot use the 1.8V signalling method that class 10 cards have.

    In some cases, a higher-end SD card may work, but not

    at full speed, because the RPi apparently can't shift down

    to the 1.8V interface.

     

    In some cases a higher-end SD card may not actually be faster,

    depending on whether you do I/O in small chunks or large contiguous blocks.

     

    Also, you may get better performance from a hard drive

    connected to a USB port.  Once the RPi is booted from the

    SD card, you can mount your filesystem from a USB drive.

     

    And of course be sure to get your SD card from a reputable

    source, because there are apparently lots of fake cards for sale.
