umm, is my Pi supposed to look like this?

I've just recieved my Pi! ... but I'm concerned after all the waiting I've been sent a dud. I noticed the USB connector sitting at a funny angle and on closer inspection I found this...

... it looks as though one of the connector's pins has missed its hole in the pcb. I don't want to plug anything into it and power it up if there's a chance its bad.

What do you guys think?

You Pi is indeed not well, and as you can see the pin is bent over and rests on the C29 silkscreen instead of in the hole.

Your options are - contact E-14 and get authorisation to return it, or if you feel happy and have some Kynar wire (also known as Wire Wrap) you can make your own repair, or if you know anyone with a hot air pencil (NOT a paint stripper or other hot air gun) you can attempt to desolder the connector, sort the pin out and resolder. This last option looks as though it wouldn't be easy due to the sticky pad/insulator that is under the connector.

So, depending on your skills and preference I'd suggest contacting E-14.

What is it's serial number and board stuffer? The board house number is between the power connector and S2 connector and is the bottom 3 digits - mine is the first batch and is 208 - just so that others who have the same production run can give special attention to theirs when it arrives.,

Makes one wonder if the USB is electrically tested off the assembly line.

    Colin

Thanks for the quick advice and confirming my concerns about that pin! I'm way too clumsy to attempt a repair so I guess its time to return it and don the title of captain unlucky.

Now if you'll excuse me I feel the need to go and cry in the corner for a while.

    All might not be lost!

That is pin 4  which connects to ground, the metal screen of the connector is connected to the same ground. As that appears to be soldered correctly in your photo, everything should work. Electrically there might be some extra noise especially if using a long USB cable, but under normal conditions it should still work.

I double checked this with my board.

    Off to bed now!

    Colin

PS. even if you decide to keep it, E-14 should probably be made aware of a QC problem.

recent boards, starting with week 1218 (as opposed to 1208,1213,1215) have the week number on the back side.

    http://elinux.org/images/0/0f/RasPiBack-Farnell.JPG

They also have the CE mark silkscreened, rather than a sticker on the back used in weeks 1213 and 1215,

although the FCC mark is a sticker.   However it looks like your FCC mark is actually silkscreened, so maybe

you have a later version than week 1218?

Also the 19.2MHz crystal (X2) on the back says "JAPAN" starting in week 1218, and the PoP ram is samsung

(rather than hynix) starting in week 1215.

These piccies should give you the numbers you're after - the only one I recognised was the serial number...

    Chris,

Thanks!  It's a week 1218  (see the back side near the FCC mark, by the edge).

but the FCC mark is different from the other week 1218 board photo.

Also, I can't tell the PoP ram from the picture, but I assume it's samsung, not hynix.
