dont have permission to move/copy file

Hi there

 

i am trying to follow this websitehttp://www.ctrl-alt-del.cc/2012/05/raspberry-pi-meets-edimax-ew-7811un-wireless-ada.html to setup my EDIMAX wi fi dongle, but when i get to move or extract the file it says i dont have permission, how do i get permission to do this bit??

 

Download the compiled driver module from here, unpack and move to /lib/modules/3.1.9+/kernel/net/wireless/

 

 

Any help would be great as i only got my PI this morning and want to play around with it.

    I was just using the file manger. How do I move an item with commands?

     

    Sorry, new to all this, been a windows user since 3.1

    on linux, the move command is mv.

       mv oldfilename newfilename

    you can get linux help, by doing

       man mv

    Okay, I am new to Linux, so please treat me as a newbiee.

     

    I have booted my pi to startx and I downloaded the wifi compressed file, I managed to unzip it to a folder I made on the desktop called Darren. I need to move or copy the file 8192cu.ko to /lib/modules/3.1.9+/kernel/net/wireless

     

    When I do this it says I don't have permission. Is this because I am in the system files and trying to change it while it's loaded startx ???

     

    How do I move this file please????

    Here's what I think you need to do.

    First you want to change your working directory to Darren,

    if it isn't already.  The command for changing directories is cd.

    You would give the path to Darren after the cd.

    If you want to know what directory you are in, you can type  pwd.

    You can go up one level by typing 

        cd  ..

    (that's cd followed by a space and then two dots)

    You can list the files in the current directory by typing  ls

     

    Then the command to move the file would be:

      sudo  mv  8192cu.ko  /lib/modules/3.1.9+/kernel/net/wireless

     

    Alternatively, if you don't want to change directories, and your

    working directory is one directory above Darren, you could skip

    the cd command and do:

     

      sudo  mv  Darren/8192co.ko  /lib/modules/3.1.9+/kernel/net/wireless
