Just seen this item on Amazon, with specific mention of the Raspi:

Acknowledging that it also needs a special lead to supply the full two amps , what are the thoughts on this generally ?

The cable looks interesting. It's hard to predict whether a Micro USB cable has low-resistance wires. I wish they'd give real specs like max resistance and wire gauge. The cable's photo looks like it has a barrel connector and a barrel-to-Micro-USB adapter. I hope it's the high current version of a barrel plug, i.e., the one with actual wiping contacts.
