discrepancy in number of RPi's delivered

Element14's most recent blog entry:

http://www.element14.com/community/groups/raspberry-pi/blog/2012/04/27/delivery-update--27th-april

claims that all 110,000 customers who ordered before 18 April will have their RPi

delivered by the end of June.  That date has now slipped by about 2 weeks, so perhaps

around 90,000 have actually been delivered, assuming a current rate of 10K/week.

RS produced a chart on 18 June:

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=8786

projecting 51,500 shipped by 1 July, if I understand correctly and

they are still on schedule.

Combining these numbers results in an estimated 141,500 units shipped.

But on twitter we read:

https://twitter.com/Raspberry_Pi/status/219928503355842560

"Somewhere between a quarter and half a million.  ..."

I assume there isn't a third distributor accounting for the

difference in the figures.  Am I missing something?

Clearly that statement has a 100% error margin ...

RS and Newark don't account for all the sales in Europe where large numbers of units shipped earlier than in the US, though.

    Gary,

You say "RS and Newark", but I think the figures I gave are "RS and element14",

where element14 includes worldwide sales, not just Newark.

Maybe so. But there may also be a substantial number that are in distributor warehouses or en route there (I.e., assembled but not yet sold at retail.)

Years ago I worked for a (now defunct) company that tracked sales of grocery products. There can be a big difference between consumer sales figures, wholesale sales figures, warehouse withdrawals, and packaging or manufacturing numbers. Eventually it all gets to the consumer, or nearly all. But there can be six months or even a year between production and end sales. Larger items, like automobiles, take even longer before stocks are depleted.

the only ones I have heard of that are unaccounted for are the

400 from the first 2K reserved for the QtonPi folks.  There may

be warehouses full of them all over the world, but I doubt it.
