Relatively quiet in here at the moment.

The tsumani of comments in this forum seems to have faded away significantly compared to a couple of months ago?

 

Are we all:

 

Busy with new Pi projects?

 

Waiting for delivery and getting on with life?

 

Moving on to other boards and other projects after trying the Pi out?

 

It none of the above I'd be interested to hear any other reasons. Yes I see that about 20 regulars are still posting as they have since day one. image

 

(just time wasting here whilst sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and sudo rpi-update etc over SSH )

  • I remember a similar trajectory with BeagleBoard back in 2008.  The Google Groups postings went something like this:

     

    1. How do I get my hands on a BeagleBoard?  When is Digi-Key going to have them in stock?  The whingeing stopped when manufacturing caught up with demand.

     

    2. How do I get [USB, serial, power supply, DVI-D, VGA, Ethernet, etc.] working?  Postings settled down once the lore got copied to the FAQ Wiki, except for newbies who couldn't find the Wiki.

     

    3. How do I cross-compile for BB?  Again, postings settled down once the lore made it to the Wiki.

     

    So now the BeagleBoard Group is down to the maintenance level.  Given the number of RasPis delivered, it's actually pretty amazing that the problem reports are as few as we've seen.  The RasPi Wiki is quite good, so most people can get their questions answered there.  The RasPi software is also quite a bit easier to prepare than it was in the early BeagleBoard days.

     

    So, what are people doing with their RasPis?  Well, that's hard to tell.  Unless one has a Steve Jobs to promote one's project, it's hard for anyone to find out if it even exists.  Most projects worth anything take a lot of time to complete, and the kind of people who can complete them are often not good at marketing.

     

    A lot of poeple are probably using RasPis as media boxes and game machines.  We probably won't hear much from them.  We might hear a lot more if RasPi ever gets a presence in education.  Somehow I don't see that happening quickly.

    The old concept of webrings might be useful for making Pi projects.more visible, because as you say, techies are not usually good at self-promotion.  Their projects would then get visited at least occasionally as a random webring selection.

     

    How to publicize Pi projects might make a worthwhile thread topic here.  A http://elinux.org/RPi_Projects page already exists,  but when there are thousands of Pi projects I expect it'll be unwieldy.
