Using a tablet for a monitor...?

Former Member

Greetings,

I just got my Raspberrypi and was kicking around some ideas for useing it. The thought of a midea center is by far the neatest, however with my on the road lifestyle I was thinking that having a display and keyboard my be a better use for me. (and cheaper that a laptop so lost/damaged is not as scary.) I have several damaged Nook color and kindle fires bought on ebay with chip malfunctions. Display is still fine. I'm not very electrical savy (yet) and was wondering if I could take the working screen and somehow use it with the Raspberry. I know that there might be some heavy sodering involved, but I love a challange. I haven't split them open to see what kind of display connection that have. If anyone has opened one or know where I can find the schematics.

Thanks for reading

This isnt a schematic but is a teardown of the nook color.  this should give you some idea of general location of the components.  http://nookowners.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18&Itemid=32.  Since your just trying to use the screen then i would search for the screens schematic and that would narrow the search down.

    Carl,

Although not a tablet, have you had a look at the small screens available on places like Amazon that are meant for Car reversing viewing ? 4.3 inch going for around £22 or so, bit more for larger ones.

You can use a tablet as a "client", just get a goop app that implements vnc and you are done.

BTW, some time ago I was able to get via W00t a Velocity Micro Cruz 7" tablet it uses a Samsung SoC, I did hack it to get access to the serial console and JTAG interface, didn't have much time to play with it but you will find many like that that have been hacked and can be used in many ways.

So, didn't think that there would be as many different solutions. Thanks everyone! I'm going to go over some of these great options.
