default passwords

I am a newbie to the Raspberry Pi.  I have downloaded Debian 6-19-4-2012 and Raspiwrite and installed the OS on the SD card and installed it in the Raspberry Pi and booted it to the point that it wants a user id and a password to continue.  None of the ‘suggested’ UID/Passwprd combinations available on various websites seem to work.   Does anyone have a suggestion about a good UID/Pass combo, or what is going on and how to work around it?  Some of the documented suggestions seem to be not useful when you are trapped in the UID/PWD loop and cannot get out and back to a command line.  In newbie speak HELP!!

  • Knowing which combinations you have tried would be useful or where you downloaded Debian from but I would have gone with it being the version below so

    Passwords I have tried, in UID/Pass format and assuming I don't make a typo:

     

    - pi/raspberry

    - Pi/raspberry

    - Pi/Raspberry

    - pi/Raspberry

    - root/root

     

    There were a couple of others I saw on what I assumed to be a much older version that I cannot remember now.

     

    Another interesting, to me anyway, feature about this process is that I initially connected an Apple keyboard and mouse, using the keyboard as a hub, to the RasPi.   Best I could tell as the screen scrolled by was that it was unhappy abouht the keyboard mouse.  Eventually I diconnected both and all went well until the UID/PASS.  Needed at least a keyboard for that, connected just the keyboard, and got to the point where I could not log in.

    One thing to verify is that RasPi is accepting characters from your keyboard correctly.  Since the password is not echoed, try typing "raspberry" when it prompts for username just to make sure RasPi is receiving from your keyboard correctly.  It may be that Apple is remapping the keys in an Apple Standard way and confusing RasPi.  It's also possible that the USB is unreliable (usually due to an iffy power supply and/or micro USB cable or iffy X1 crystal soldering) which could cause it to miss or duplicate characters, so I recommend doing a quick username echo test.
