It seems a fairly reasonable guess at the future to me, if one ignores the inevitable dating by clothing fashions, as well as the ending which was probably left open to a range of interpretations on purpose, mostly negative where it concerns people.
Everything we do as engineers or as educators will contribute to that future or a similar one, as it's an ongoing and hence inevitable part of our evolution as a species, often described as a process of integration with our machinery. It's funny to think of Pi as part of this process, but it certainly is, for better or for worse.
