A good starting place is the RasPi Wiki Troubleshooting page: http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting

If you can see the img file on the SD card then this is the problem. The img needs to be written to the SD card so that its contents (its basically a complete file system)are on the SD not the img file.

Have a look on the RPi forums & wiki for help on how to do this.

    Jimmy,

As above, if you can see the img file on your SD card, that is the reason for problems. See this guide on the Rpi site

    http://elinux.org/RPi_Easy_SD_Card_Setup

To precis, download the image, stick the SD card in your pc, open Windisk imager, browse to the image file, select the correct disk to write to (Not your C drive) write the image out, put the card in the pi, things should start happening.

    Steve

Is there really nothing better than this win32diskimager available for windows ?  The number of posts that are appearing where it seems to be the common denominator for a non-working Pi has me wondering if it isn't the biggest problem here.
