Playing videos/short movies on the Pi

I would like to create a interactive video player with the Pi.  Based on some input switches, the Pi would loop a short .wmv, .mov or similar file to create a simple interactive toy. For example, if no switches are hit, and the unit is in standby, a certain movie is looped.  When "switch A" is hit, another movie will play, and then the Pi reverts back to the idle movie.  This would be in the Pi programming environment.

For now, I do not have my Pi yet, but running the Qemu emulator to get started.  I appreciate any help.  eds@edcheung.com.

Take a look at this Adafruit tutorial:

    http://learn.adafruit.com/playing-sounds-and-using-buttons-with-raspberry-pi

Instead of sound, you could modify it to play videos.  On the Pi, there is a movie player in /opt/vc/src/hello_pi/hello_video.  See Eben's webinar for more details: http://www.element14.com/community/events/3282

    cheers,

For the first link, it looks like this line is the key line:

    os.system('mpg321 vader.mp3 &')

That appears to do an OS call to run mpg321 with the argument of the file name.  I will have to see how to use that when I get my Pi (still using emulator).

For the second part, since it has been a while since I used Linux, it took me some time.  I found the directory in the emulator, and tried to run the make, but got an error:

    /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lilclient

collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

    make: *** [hello_video.bin] Error 1

Thank you for your help so far.  I posed this question on 'Embedded' list, and you (Drew) answered recommending to look into the Raspberry, so here I am.
