RPi with 512mb Memory?

wallarug
wallarug over 13 years ago

I just found this: http://au.element14.com/raspberry-pi/raspbrry-modb-512m/sbc-raspberry-pi-model-b-512mb/dp/2191863

Is this a raspberry pi with 512Mb RAM or is this a joke.

There is a fancy new landing page now when you go to the Farnell UK site, asking if you are looking for a 512M Pi.

As this would appear to be made in the far east, what does this mean for the Wales based ones ? Are there now two versions, both at the same price but one with half the memory ? Can't see the point in trumpeting that manufacture is in the UK, if that model becomes obsolete within a few weeks ?

Anyway, ordered and awaiting dispatch confirmation, thanks to Fergus and some great detective work.

    Hi Steve

I can confirm that currently, all the 512MB boards we are shipping anywhere in the world in October are made in the UK (as you know, Wales to be precise!).

We will continue to manufacture both in the UK and China this quarter for a mixture of volume and logisitices reasons which means that in November and December we will be shipping boards manaufactured in both locations. Irrespective of manufacturing source, all boards will be rev 2.0 and 512MB

    I hope this helps

    Best regards

    Mike

Straight from the mouth of the horse! Good news I reckon, same price. Bound to happen sooner or later as 512 dropped in price and 256 increased. Happened soooner than I reckoned though.Sounds like the channel is empty of 256 as well as all delivereies from now are 512. Managed to avoid the Osbourne Effect despite what looks like a premature release by Farnell. Gotta wonder who runs that company - first they released the rev2 before announcmeent then the 512MB. Probably best not to reply on them to organise a pee up in a brewery.

Thanks for the confirmation Mike, and thanks also to your devs who fixed the non-working link so quickly. image

I'm more than a little angry about this. I received my second Pi last week (not from Farnell, I should say, but a distributor, New IT). It was a 256MB version. This week, I learn that a 512mb is now available and that had I waited another week this would be the version I would get, albeit with a bit of a delay. Oh, and it's the same price. So effectively, I've just purchased a piece of technology that has become obsolete virtually from the minute I bought it.

    So, two questions:

    1. What happens to the 256mb units sitting on racks at suppliers at the moment?

    2. Is there any way to upgrade a 256 to 512? Obviously, this would have to be very low cost as, apparently, the 512 board is no more valuable than the 256.

Hope someone at Farnell can advise.

Mike, thank you very much for the clarification - that is great news all round image
