RPi with 512mb Memory?

wallarug
wallarug over 13 years ago

I just found this: http://au.element14.com/raspberry-pi/raspbrry-modb-512m/sbc-raspberry-pi-model-b-512mb/dp/2191863

Is this a raspberry pi with 512Mb RAM or is this a joke.

I don't believe there is any inventory, at least in America.  They are back ordered for months.

    Sent from my iPad

The e-mail seemed designed for American audiences, and even had a coupon for 15% off Pi accessories (which expires before my backorder date?). Seems a rather odd way to conduct business to say the least. Maybe it got sent out too soon or to the wrong region?

Well, I'm in the UK and when I ordered (14th October)  there were 300 'ready for next day delivery' - so I'm wondering why mine is still 'processing' on the 16th !

No doubt it will arrive soon and if not, I can wait.

    Hi,

I will pass your message to Newark Customer Service so they confirm with you delivery date.

    Thanks,

But there will most likely be future RasPis with different SoCs, perhaps even ones with a more powerful general-purpose CPU or multiple CPUs so you can dedicate one to USB and other housekeeping.

It's a reasonable guess that no engineer (hardware or software) who has been stung by the Pi's USB faults will want to repeat that experience.  Whatever SoC is chosen for the next Pi design, I think it is highly likely that it will contain a fully functional USB controller in hardware.

That's not a reasonable guess. Engineers work round problems, they don't just whine on about them and go elsewhere, especially if there is nowhere else to go. As far as my experience goes, the latest driver changes mean the USB works pretty well, so the vast majority of people will presumably not see any issues with USB, and I'm thinking that further changes will make it even better. Of course the vast majority of people buying the Pi are not engineers (yet) either.

Speaking for myself as a computer engineer, I do work around problems all the time -- if it's possible, and it's practical, and it's in the best interests of the product.  Sometimes it's time to bid adieu to a chip or technology -- no matter how nostalgic you feel towards it -- and move on to something newer and better.  I don't know the specifics of the Synopsys USB core used in the BCM2835, but given its published list of limitations and what other people have been saying here at element14 and at the RasPi forum I would guess that software alone will only go so far towards fixing the problems.  If the problems are because of USB core limitations, some due to capacity and some due to real-time response, working around them is bound to be incomplete.  If the problems are fixable by software, then it's just a matter of how good the documentation is and whether Linux can be made to respond fast enough.  However, we've heard the low-level device driver software is pretty hard to grok, so it may be that a better RasPi will arrive before the BCM2835 USB problems are fully solved image

If you've not seen before, then this might interest you: Adafruit makes a low profile microSD adapter intended for the Raspberry Pi:  http://www.newark.com/adafruit-industries/966/low-profile-microsd-card-adapter/dp/44W3512. (Many of Adafruit's Raspberry Pi products are now stocked by Newark element14)

Hmm - will have to wait and see what turns up in your shipping package to be sure. I ordered my Pi from element14 New Zealand - looks like it was fulfilled from Element14 Australia.

When i noticed they had a couple of thousand turn up in stock, i called (yesterday) to ask if they were the new improved spec models - and was assured yes i would revieve one of the newer models.

It turns up by courier today, and disappointed to see that despite being a newer board manufactured in the UK, it seems to have a 256meg chip fitted.

I guess i ordered the 256meg version, so i shouldnt be so disappointed - but actually am rather gutted as i want it to run XBMC - which would certainly benefit from the extra memory...

guess i should just have cancelled and re-ordered. Grrrr.

    Hi Pete

Looking at your post I would also think you should have received a 512MB unit

You may have doen this but can you run the following command and check the code number that the board returnsd

    cat/proc/cpuinfo

If you’re running revision 1.0 you will see code numbers 2 or 3

If you're running revision 2.0, 256MB you will see code numbers 4 or 6.

If you are running the Raspberry new Pi Model B (512MB) Revision 2.0 you will see code numbers 13 or 14

    Thanks

    Mike
