Portable Pi power source

I have seen posts relating to using Pi without mains power and thought it might be worth listing the solution I propose to use for the portable race control system I am developing. These batteries are used extensively in burglar alarm systems and come in various capacities. They are supposed to be replaced in alarms every 5 years but their life is probably double that so if you want a cheap one visit your local security firm and see what they have availiable. The other bits have come off ebay and I paid £1.86 for the convertor and £19.69 for the monitor which is meant for use in a car rear view system. The dc to dc convertor is 68% efficient at the Pi operating current, which I have measured as around 400ma, and the monitor draws 120ma at 12 volts. This makes the current draw at 12 volts to be 400ma so the duration with a 2.1 AH battery should be 5 hours. With a 7AH battery this would increase to 17.5 hours. The photo shows the components used and the diagram shows the circuit. The cable used should be rated a 5 amps or higher.imageimage

I am in the process of ordering parts for something similar. However I will be drawing a lot more power from my pi (High power wifi dongle, various circuits running from both the 3.3v and 5v GPIO pins, etc). In addition I need to power external relay driver circuitry. Therefore, I am going with a 12AH scooter battery; not much bigger than yours. So I don't have to deal with wiring anything, I am just getting a cigarette lighter power supply (Two USB outputs: 2.5 Amp and 1 Amp at 5V), a cigarette lighter socket, and pre-made USB cables with 22 AWG power pin wires.

HI - an interesting pragmatic approach. I had a scooter a couple of years ago and I used a 7AH version of this battery on it quite successfully. The DC to DC convertor is rated at 3 amps output but I have not checked its voltage stability and regulation at full load yet. The convertors are cheap enough to use 2 if it was necessary to supply the Pi with a dedicated unit to protect its operation, and that is what I will do if I have any doubts after I have completed regulation tests. image
