openoffice should open powerpoint, but sometimes has problems with font sizes etc.  What version of openoffice, and is it a ppt or a pptx file ?

    try LibreOffice ?

    apt-get install openoffice.org

That worked for me and the powerpoint progam (although very slow) works great.

Also, are LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org the same thing?  I think the command above installed all the LibreOffice packages.

LibreOffice is a fork of Openoffice. There are many reasons for the fork, but it's mainly due to the difficulty of getting new code into OpenOffice - Sun used it as the base for the commercial StarOffice - and as the whole thing is now owned by Oracle there were many more concerns over the future of OpenOffice.

Regardless, LibreOffice currently seems to be progressing more rapidly and appears to have more developer support. So it would seem to have more likelyhood of keeping up with changes in the microsoft file formats.

I will say that in my experience the support for pptx files isn't perfect. Various things don't work the same as in the real powerpoint application, fonts can be wrong etc. Where I work, they have this habit of embedding Outlook emails in powerpoint presentations and that really just doesn't work right in LibreOffice on linux as far as I can tell.
