Model A vs Model B power consumption measurements

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

I thought this was interesting:

110mA - Model-A idle

330mA - Model-B idle

Thanks to RobertMM for posting the data.

these and several other measurements are shown here:

How do you do tests when the Model A is not available yet?

With the right tools you can convert a Model B to a Model A.  They use the same PCB.  Basically, you remove the LAN9512 and then hook up the BCM2835's USB port to the external connector by populating R36 and R37.  Details are in the schematics -- look for components tagged (A) and (B).  When you remove the LAN9512, the 1V8 error is no longer an issue.

Couldn't the model A use less than what you have stated here then?

Yes, there are a lot more components missing from the Model A such as Ethernet jack P4, and the USB connector is only one port, and there are fewer LEDs, and a bunch of passive components are also missing.  However, I don't think any of them consume power with the LAN9512 gone, so for testing Model A functionality and power consumption I think all you need to do is remove the LAN9512 and add the two resistors.

Will you redo the tests when the Model A accually comes out?

And do you think the results would be much different?
