Banned... No good deed goes unpunished

I can't quite believe this. The Foundation has banned me from the Forum. No warning, no notification, just the ban.

I _think_ it's because I warned them about an article I'd read where the problems with delivery from RS weren't being addressed by either the Foundation or by RS themselves... And then daring to explain why I'd posted it on the Forum instead of PMing someone (Liz and Eben are in the States...).

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=19273&p=188490

I wouldn't mind if I'd been slating the Foundation or RS directly!

They only banned my username on the raspberry pi forums so I can still scan them as a guest although I am not sure that I want to any more as if my raspberry pi doesn't arrive soon i'll cancel my RS order and use the money for something else like beer or a tablet to rip apart. but i'm curious about one thing. in this thread i've seen a couple of the admins and mods names from that other place mentioned but they have loads of admins and mods so are they ALL nasty or are some of them actually ok?

    David,

I got my username banned and then both my home IP (static) and even worse than that, my employers outward facing IP address.

I asked nicely to be unbanned, as I didn't want to block everyone in my company from seeing the pi stuff, although there would probably only be a few people interested. If they had just stopped at my details i'd not have been bothered (that's what a VPN is for after all!) but I did think the work address one was way over the top.

The did unblock me on both IP addresses, but I don't visit there much any more because of the attitude.

I shudder to think of the personality of whomever it was at RPF that devised their policy of extreme intolerance of discussion.  It was certainly no engineer nor educator, as neither wouild last 5 minutes in their jobs which require the ability to engage and understand others.  Perhaps a prison warden, that seems an appropriate background, although even a good prison warden would be better if he/she engaged with the gripes of inmates.

Be that as it may, it's very rare to find such hostility in community relations being implemented so blatantly and on such a public platform.  I've not encountered anything quite this extreme before, usually it's just one bad egg BOFH administrator unloading his personal problems on people, but what we see at RPF is quite different.  It's clearly a directed policy because it is so unwavering.

Blimey, you think its the worst you've seen - you can't get out much. Proof that second lifers are not that familar with the real world?

I'd really like to see some of this 'blatant' hostility. This extremism, this evidence of directed policy. Because to me, and presumably to most other non-sociopathic types, it's seems pretty good. Lots of politeness from most of the posters, very few people going off on one, a gneeral feeling, to me anyway, of everyone getting on.

Is that because all the bad eggs have been removed?

Hey Steve, is the attitude you don't like the one where that when you ask politely to have your IP's addresses released for your work colleagues, they do it for you? What a bunge of drongos they must be!

Wierd, had an email saying there was a post here that looked really interesting but it's gone. I guess hit too close to home. Had a load of Foundation name calling in, done by a poster here claiming it wasnt a place for name calling....just wanted to say - nice post dude. Wish I'd had to time to look at that stuff up!

It was basically the text from this E14 forum post, not sure why it was censored, it was only agreeing with Mograine that name calling had no place on these forums and that everyone should be professional and should respect others.

Seems very ironic that is has been censored becuase it is one of the things that the Rasbery Pi moderators always get critcized for, using terms like 'state police' and 'reign of terror' image

It seems like one or more of the members don't like being reminded of what they have said in the past and are removing my posts using the "report abuse" button.

This is censorship of the worst kind of all: remove any point of view that you don't like so that no one can see it. Very telling. It's been said that this is a place where you can speak openly and there is no moderator interference. This is clearly because anyone can immediately delete anything that they don't agree with and it  then requires active intervention on behalf of a moderator to reinstate it. This is back to front.

No wonder there seems to be little disagreement around here - anything that doesn't conform to the groupmind is disappeared at the push of a button. If this is free speech give me active moderation any day - even by 'hatemongers'.

I suggest you take a look at this thread about the TOU of element14.  If a member considers a comment is abusive, he or she can Report Abuse and the comment is temporarily hidden.  A moderator then reviews the comment and decides whether or not to reinstate it.  If the moderator decides that the comment violates the TOU then it remains hidden.

While I personally found your earlier post unhelpful to the element14 community, I'm not the one who reported abuse.  However, I suspected it would shortly be reported by someone else for the same reasons a thread with IIRC essentially the same List of Grievances was hidden last August, and I suspect your comment will remain hidden.  If you want to publish your List of Grievances elsewhere and write a comment with a link to it here, I suspect that your linking comment won't be hidden.

Have you tried publishing it at the RasPi forum?  It would be interesting to see whether moderators there would find it abusive to the Larger RasPi Community even though it purports to defend the honor of RasPowersThatBe.

Why would a forum allow a set of posts about the forum owners that contains that level of abuse appear on thier own forum? That would be completely bonkers.

Why should the post remain hidden here btw? It contained a list of  posts MADE HERE by frequent posters. All it did was collate them in to one big post. That fact they were abusive and really showed up the posters perhaps?

Let's hope that by putting them all the one place, the poster gave some insight to the posters, that perhaps they are going way over the top.

Anyway, it's real late here. Gotta sleep.
