New Raspberry Pi w/ 512mb - DOA?

Just received my Raspberry Pi (very excited), and have not been able to get it to work. Here's what I've tried so far:

 

  • Connected Pi to a Samsund LCD TV using HDMI, standard optical mouse & USB keyboard, Ethernet connection to my home network, 4gb SD card pre-loaded with Debian Linux 6 (from Element14), and applied power using my iPad USB charger (rated 5v @ 2a).

 

  • All I got was a solid PWR led on the Pi board. Nothing from ACT, FDX, LNK or 100 LEDs. No video whatsoever, and apparently no boot activity. TV continued to display the "no signal" status.

 

  • Tried both the composite and HDMI on a 2nd TV. Still nothing. TV continued to display the "no signal" status.

 

  • Tried applying power to the Pi board with nothing connected except the power supply. Still nothing.

 

  • Opened SD card image on my Pc (rinning ehem... Windows 7) and was able to open & view the configuration files. So I guess the image is intact.

 

  • Finally spoke to customer support @ Element14. (By the way Great People!), getting a replacement for both the board and SD card, but would like to know if I'm doing anything wrong, before the replacement shows up.

 

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • I had the same thing happen.

     

    you just need a blank fat32 sd card

     

    1. gotohttp://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot
    2. downloadberryboot-20120904.zip
    3. unzip to sd card
    4. insert and boot PI
    5. attach network cable to PI  and router
    6. connect power to PI
    7. system will boot and flash and dance
    8. when formating DO NOT use the default 'ext4 (no discard)'  DO choose 'ext4'

     

    It will format the card then you can choose the os to install.

     

    PS. I tried the default ext4(no discard) and had to repartition my SD card using Gparted

    I ran into two problems with the 512 Mbyte version of the Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer (SBC):

     

    First, the power brick provided in the original shipment (Newark part number 82T4005) isn't robust enough to power the extra memory on the SBC.  As a workaround, I used a USB cable (Newark part number 06W1049) to power the SBC.

     

    Secondly, the Debian Linux preprogrammed, 4 GByte SD card (Newark part number 96T7436) with Debian 6 for Raspberry Pi doesn't boot with the 512 Mbyte board.  To get this working, I followed instructions similar to those on your community link:

    But I did find some differences.  What I did was:

     

    The link in step 1 is dead (so far)

    Reformat the SD card as follows:

         http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/Applications_GUI_Multimedia/Creating_shared_FAT32_Partition

    Download berryboot-20120904.zip  (step 2)

    Unzip   berryboot-20120904.zip onto the SD card FAT32 partition

    Attach network cable, monitor, mouse, and keyboard to the SBC

    Insert SD card

    Connect power

    when formating DO NOT use the default 'ext4 (no discard)'  DO choose 'ext4'

    Upgrade berryboot.  The program asks if you want to do this.  All you have to do is say yes.

     

    At that point, it asks if you want to reboot.  You should say yes.  When berryboot comes back up, it brings up a berryboot menu that gives you the option of installing the Operating System.  Debian Wheezy Raspbian 2012.09 works fine.

     

     

    To reiterate, apparently, one has to install berryboot on a freshly reformatted SD card, upgrade berryboot from the web (it does this automatically), and then choose the OS.  I picked the Debian Linux made for Raspberry Pi, and it seems to work fine.

    I just got my RPI a couple days ago and was beating my head and these forums trying to get more than a power light.

    I live in Montreal and locally we have ABRA electronics as a supplier of these boards, I picked up one as well as a pre-installed 4gb Debian 6 card from Element14.

     

    Initially it would not boot, so I setup a 16gb PNY card with a download of wheezy, still no love.

     

    I was given a new usb micro power cable that is from Monoprice, using an iphone 1A adapter, wasn't sure if that was a problem.

     

    Anyways, eventually I followed the post above re: Berryboot and all is well!  the Pi is alive!

     

    Thank you so much!

     

    the fun begins.

     

    I haven't tried the preinstalled card again yet, we will see.

    One of the guys at work received a new 512MB Pi and all it would do is light the red LED.

    He knew I had a couple of older Pis that I had had woring, and asked if I could check it.

     

    I found that one of the distros (raspbian) wouldn't run on this model, but the same card, supply, etc, would run on the other 2 Pi's.

     

    The other distro was an older Debian, and it worked fine.

     

     

    So don't depair, it might be the distro for reasons beyond me.
