Raspberry Pi 512mb Bad USB controller connection.

wallarug
wallarug over 12 years ago

Is anyone else having the following issue:

I have discovered that there is a problem with the USB circuity. When-ever the device is touched on the USB controller (IC3), the device resets every thing attached to the USB circuit. When any device is removed or plugged into the device, the whole Raspberry Pi resets.

It is a real pain and I am sending my RPi back to be replaced.

IC3 contains the usb hub functionallity. If something goes wrong with it, it's normal that all usb devices fail.

There have been reports that the xtal of that chip sometimes had cold solder joints. It's X1 on the bottom of the board underneath that chip.

The Pi rebooting when you hotplug usb devices is caused by a dip in the power supply rail. The usb ports supply isn't decoupled very well.

So, likely a replacement board will show the same behavour.

I never had this problem with any of my rev1 boards and no-one else seems to be having this problem.

My guess is a bad IC connection or a broken trace on the PCB, so when you flex the board the slightest bit the connection opens.  Lots of people have touched their LAN chips to measure temperature digitally and I've seen very few reports of anything like this, so RMA sounds good to me.

I have sent the sales team @element14 an email to arange for a new one to be shipped to me.  I got a similar response on the RaspberryPi forums as well (RMA).

I had this problem few times. I think it was 2 times when PI restarted when I touched USB port metal shield and few times when I inserted e new USB device. But it is not allways like this. Do not know why it hapened. Las tim I used it, it was all ok.

Interesting thread.  It sounds like a bunch of the RS RasPi's are "half-baked" image

I really dislike BGAs.  Cell phone makers love them because (1) they're small and (2) they're unreliable so you'll have to buy a new phone every 2 years.  My parents still have a couple of Western Electric dial phones with 40-year MTBF.  They have better sound quality than these newfangled electronic gizmos with their silly artificial inductors.

There should be one if this is a major issue (which it looks like).  Maybe when they find some time they might give us more information.
