Got my Raspberry Pi but......l

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

There is a really strong smell from it and I haven't even plugged it in yet! I suppose it's kind of like a new electronics/gluey type smell, hard to describe but really powerful.  Just wondering if this smell is normal as I am slightly concerned re allowing my little boy to muck about with it just in case.  I have removed it from the antis tactic bag to 'off-gas'. Anyone else found this?

Thanks :)

I love the smell of burning Electronics in the morning :-)

Like Graham says, I don't think this is anything to worry about. Have a cup of water nearby in case it does spark up, but I doubt it will happen.

I was more envisioning, should anything look like it was going bad, to unplug the pi from the mains and use the USB lead to dunk it in said water, not throw it over the pi whilst it is plugged in. I don't think anyone would think that was a good idea. I don't know many people that have a Co2 canister around the house, or a fire blanket.

Regarding the garage, if as people seem to indicate the pi is going to burst into flames as soon as it is plugged in, I have plenty of flammable stuff in my garage !

It's hardly going to explode is it ? I think a sense of proportion would be good, poor Simone has probably sent it back already in case it obliterates her street when it is plugged in.

    :-)

Simone is doing a good job just having a go with RPi.  I'm sure she will find a good purpose for this excellent bit of tackle just from reading posts at the various forums.  The great thing about RPi is that the cost is so low that you can experiment without burning a lot of $$$$$'s and I say that she is doing the best thing by asking when she is not sure.  Most times, if you make a big mistake, all you have to do is re-flash your card.  However, having said that,  I'm thinking of writing to the Production Engineer with a suggestion that a nice lavender smell be embeded in the product.  image

Completely agree that Simone is doing a good job by getting a Pi for her son. Also think she is doing the right thing by asking when she is not sure when it concerns the safety of her son.

A good question deserves a good answer however and a picture of a smoking man with an electrical cable, to my mind, isn't that answer.

I think you gave the most pragmatic answer originally.
