IOGear GWU625 with Raspberry PI

What do I have to do to get the IOGear GWU625 wirelesss adapter to work with my raspberry pi? I followed the raspberry pi instructions to load the latest updates to the os. But when I do lsusb the adapter shows up as RTL8191SU and when I try to search for that device it doesn't find it. This is after I do the update of all the drivers. Several websites claim the adapter works with the Raspberry Pi. I am pretty inexperienced with stuff like this so I need very explicit instructions.

  • Does ifconfig show a wlan0?  If so can you find any access points with:

    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

     

    If so, then you should be able to set it up with the WiFi Config tool in X (startx if you are in a text terminal)

     

    If not, what does lsusb (begins with small L) show for ID (8 hex digits)?

    My Sabrent mini-WiFi shows as: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter

    lsmod shows module 8192cu loaded, which I imagine is the same one yours should use automatically.

     

    To find out which devices a module supports or which module is needed for a device ID cd /lib/modules, then cd to your kernel version, then do less modules.alias.  The slash (/) is used to search (then n for next), but note that the ID's are formatted a little different than in lsusb.  For example my ID 0bda:8176 is shown in modules.alias as v0BDAp8176, so captialize any letters in the ID with small p in the middle (0 is always zero not oh).
