booting to the desktop from the command line? and ending an unintentional perl script in the shell

stupid question?  are all the core shell commands the same in embedded linux?  Specifically i'm running raspbian and i'm in the shell and want to boot the desktop.  What do I need to type to see what this gui looks like?
