Sensors & Motors etc for use with PiFace

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I have had some success in getting my PiFace talking to my Raspberry Pi (the emulator sees the PiFace and can turn on/off LEDs), thanks to some discussions on this website. The next step is adding in sensors for input and motors/speakers/etc for output. I have no experience of electronics (plenty of programming) so am not really sure where to go to buy the right kind of sensors. Unfortunately searching the Internet isn't proving to be that helpful.

Can anyone recommend any good places to get the right equipment? Or even better, can anyone recommend individual sensors/motors/etc?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Mark,

Have you tried looking on the Foundation's fourms over on Raspberrypi.org ? There is load of stuff over there on sensing, robotics and the like.

Also, have a look on the Adafruit pages http://learn.adafruit.com/category/raspberry-pi as they will be a lot of help too.

Most of the sensors they refer to can be bought on ebay, look for Phenoptix, I have bought from them before.

    Hope this helps.

    Steve

Thank you for replying. I will have a look at those websites and at the brand name of the sensors. That's really useful.

Steve, would the TSL2561 (http://adafruit.com/products/439) and the DHT11 (http://adafruit.com/products/386) work with the PiFace connected to a breadboard? I have a small project where I want to sense temperature and light and control a heater, fan and lights according to those sensors measurements. Is this at all possible?

Hi Victor, I'm really pretty much a beginner in all this so I think you would probably be better served by making a new post and asking, there are a lot of very technical people here that should be able to give you a de-facto answer.

Having said that, I think you probably could get it to work, although the DHT11 looks particularly difficult to get working correctly in the tutorial that AdaFruit supply.

In more general terms, what you are asking (Eg, sensing light and controlling other equipment based on that measurement) is *very* doable, I'd have a look on the Pi forum here to get started, as well as making a new post on this board.

If you haven't already got a PiFace, have a look at an Arduino too, as this is more or less the sort of project it lives for :-)

    Steve

Edit: Link for topic around DHT 11 http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=23893&p=276970&hilit=dht11#p276970
