Raspberry pi as a webcam server

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Hi guys,i am new to raspberry pi,i am doing my final year project on raspberry pi

I have to create webcam server system that consist USB web camera, raspberry pi. The system will function like this :

1. Raspberry Pi will take a pictures every 30 seconds.
2. raspberry pi have to send the pictures (MMS of the picture) to the owner mobile phone and email ID.

i just want to ask several question.

1. can raspberry pi send MMS? i think i want to connect raspberry pie to the wireless broadband modem, so it will send MMS thru email. possible or not? or there is another alternative to do this thing?

2. Is there any chances owner can reply via mobile phone or email? how the owner mobile phone want to confirm back to raspberry pi? reply the email or what?

i hope anybody can help me. and also can provide me any website link that can help me to understand more about all of this.

Apart from some restrictions, consider the Raspberry pi as a conventional computer. If you can find a way to send an MMS from a conventional computer, then

that method is likely to translate to the raspberry pi.

For user data, 2G technologies like GSM and MMS are not accessible from the Internet, except by some gateways. You probably need to do some research, to find out if any

suitable gateways exist, and how to access them, and if they are free or if they need an account. Then, you'll need to use protocols based on IP (most likely HTML based) to

communicate to them. It is all feasible, but I suspect you'll need a lot of hand-holding if you're asking these basic questions (I don't mean that in a bad way, everyone

is a beginner at one point, just preparing you for the task). I'm also surprised for a final year student to consider the ancient MMS as a suitable technology for a picture

every 30 seconds. As a result, you probably need to spend a lot of time researching. If you're lucky, maybe someone else has already done it, but unfortunately I've not heard of it.

Ubiquiti aircams are being run on raspberry pi setups.

Go to the forums at ubiquiti.com, and search for raspberry pi web cam servers.

There is linux software out there that does just what you want.

It can be monitored online, send mms texts or email, on motion alarms set up in software.

The Raspberry pi is really taking off, in the web cam areana.

    Hope this helped.
