Making a raspberry pi network garage door opener - Do I use a mosfet?

I'm making it so techs can open a gate we've installed. instead of several loseable remotes. I want the m to be able to pull up a site type a pin and open the gate. I'm building the python script however

I am no a digital electornics expert.

 

I'm planing on shorting the button so that the circuit will be on a constant on. then put a mosfet between the negative of the 12v battery and use the gpio to trigger the mosfet to complete the circuit. I'm not sure how to wire this or make it work

  • Personally, I'd go with a small relay, either a reed relay or a solid-state relay.  To use a MOSFET, you need to have a common ground, which could be a problem if your RasPi is a large distance from the switch.  Also, you have to be very careful that 12V doesn't find a sneak path and kill RasPi.  With a relay you get isolation.  Don't forget the flyback diode.
